The car reviews published by many U.S auto journals on the 2011 X5 hold this BMW SAV in high esteem. The new 2011 BMW X5 gets two new gasoline engines. The xDrive35i is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that pumps out 300 hp and go from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, while the xDrive 50i is outfitted with a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8, which can sprint from 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds. However, the BMW xDrive30d is being offered with the 3.0 liter six-cylinder Advanced Diesel twin-turbocharged engine that pumps out 265 hp. The highlight of all these above-mentioned powertrains is that they are paired with a brand new eight-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic control. The smooth Steptronic allows drivers to choose from three shifting programs: Drive, Drive Sport, and Manual.

As per BMW estimates, the xDrive35i will get 17 miles per gallon in the city and 25 on the highway (compare that at 15/21 for the previous base model). They estimate the xDrive50i will get 14/20 city/highway. Since the xDrive 30d uses the same diesel engine as the 2010 X5, it’s expected to net the same mileage as before -- 19/26 mpg -- which makes it one of the more fuel-efficient SUVs in its class.

Handling is the 2011 BMW X5’s biggest strength. Power rack-and-pinion steering is standard while Active Steering, a feature that adapts the amount of steering angle to suit the driving situation is optional. Speaking of features, M Sport Package is another new feature for 2011. Available on xDrive35i Premium models and higher trims, it adds 20-inch wheels with performance tires, BMW’s Adaptive Drive system, and an increased top speed limiter (150 mph). The X5 comes standard with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Reviewers love the system and say it’s a big help in slippery conditions and even standing water. The fuel economy sees an increase of 12 and 6 per cent increase over the previous models respectively. BMW’s eminent and exclusive Dynamic Control blending with the xDrive allows new directional stability and precision under all conditions varying drive force between the two rears improving control and pulling force on different surfaces. What’s more? With 25.6 cubic feet of trunk storage and a massive 59.7 cubic feet of seat-down storage, the 2011 X6 boasts incredible room.

BMW announces end of M6 production

Its official, BMW has ceased the production of M6. That would also mean the end of its muscular V10 engine, the heart of the car.

BMW 5 Series Receives Five Stars in New More Stringent Crash Test

Press Release: The all-new BMW 5 Series was one of only two vehicles to receive an overall five-star rating in the first crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration under the new, more stringent New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).

New criteria for the NCAP rating system include: more stringent side-impact tests, use of crash-test dummies of varying size (now also simulating a small adult female as well as a medium-size adult male), collection of more data, introduction of a single overall rating score and the highlighting of high-tech crash avoidance systems like electronic stability control, lane departure warning and forward collision warning.

“The performance of the new 5 Series in these tough new tests reflects BMW’s long-held belief in a holistic approach to vehicle safety that places equal emphasis on active and passive safety,” said Jim O’Donnell, President of BMW of North America. “That’s why we were the first to introduce the Head Protection System in 1997 and why we made Dynamic Stability Control, our electronic stability control system, standard on every BMW sold in the US beginning with the 2000 model year.”

United Arts Council of Catawba County Launches 23rd Annual Mercedes Gala

Tickets are now on sale for the 23rd Mercedes Gala, conducted annually by the United Arts Council of Catawba County and chaired this year by Karen Rose. The raffle and silent auction event will be held on Monday night, December 7, 2009, at Lake Hickory Country Club in Hickory

At the end of the evening, one ticket holder will be the owner of a 2010 Mercedes-Benz automobile, purchased through the generosity of Hendrick Motors of Hickory.

Doors will open at 5:30 PM for the event, which will feature the specialties of several local restaurants. The evening will also include a silent auction that will include artwork provided by local artists and businesses. The auction and drawing will begin at 6 PM.

Funds raised through the United Arts Council Mercedes Gala go to support the Council and its 56 member organizations through project grants and operating support. Proceeds from the silent auction will be granted to artists through the Council’s Innovative Artist Project Grant.

Monroe Auditorium, Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, NC. The concert will feature Anthony M. Kelley on piano, Jarae Lauren Payton, Soprano and LaKeisha Ross as narrator. Selections will feature works by Coleridge Taylor-Perkinson, Joseph Boulogne, Dolores White and the featured pianist, Anthony M. Kelley

The featured artist of the November 7, 2009 Masterworks II series is composer/pianist Dr. Anthony M. Kelley. Dr. Kelley joined the Duke University (http://www.duke.edu/ ) music faculty in 2000 after serving as Composer-in-Residence with the Richmond Symphony for three years under a New Residencies Program Grant from Meet the Composer, Inc. He received his Bachelor¹s and Master¹s degrees from Duke University, and he earned a Ph.D. in Musical Composition from the University of California at Berkeley.

In 1999, Richmond Symphony premiered his piano concerto, Africamerica, with soloist Donal Fox. In 1998, The American Composers Orchestra gave the premier performance of a commissioned work, The Breaks, under the direction of Gerard Schwartz. The Baltimore, Detroit, Atlanta, North Carolina, Oakland East Bay, Marin (CA) and San Antonio Symphony Orchestras have also performed Kelley¹s symphonic music.

Among his awards and honors are the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Institute and Academy of Arts and Letters, and composition fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council (http://www.ncarts.org/ ), the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation.

His recent work, such as his soundtracks to the H. Lee Waters/Tom Whiteside film, Conjuring Bearden, [2006] and Dante James's film, The Doll [2007], explores music as linked with other media, arts, and sociological phenomena.

A new recording of Kelley¹s work, Grist for the Mill (commissioned by the Mallarme Chamber Players), was released in August, 2009.

He co-directs and performs in the improvisational Postmodern blues quartet called the BLAK Ensemble.

Last season, Dr. Kelley appeared as piano soloist with the Duke Symphony Orchestra in Africamerica.
