The xDrive35i is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that pumps out 300 hp and go from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, while the xDrive 50i is outfitted with a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8, which can sprint from 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds. However, the BMW xDrive30d is being offered with the 3.0 liter six-cylinder Advanced Diesel twin-turbocharged engine that pumps out 265 hp. The highlight of all these above-mentioned powertrains is that they are paired with a brand new eight-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic control. The smooth Steptronic allows drivers to choose from three shifting programs: Drive, Drive Sport, and Manual.

As per BMW estimates, the xDrive35i will get 17 miles per gallon in the city and 25 on the highway (compare that at 15/21 for the previous base model). They estimate the xDrive50i will get 14/20 city/highway. Since the xDrive 30d uses the same diesel engine as the 2010 X5, it’s expected to net the same mileage as before -- 19/26 mpg -- which makes it one of the more fuel-efficient SUVs in its class.

Handling is the 2011 BMW X5’s biggest strength. Power rack-and-pinion steering is standard while Active Steering, a feature that adapts the amount of steering angle to suit the driving situation is optional. Speaking of features, M Sport Package is another new feature for 2011. Available on xDrive35i Premium models and higher trims, it adds 20-inch wheels with performance tires, BMW’s Adaptive Drive system, and an increased top speed limiter (150 mph). The fuel economy sees an increase of 12 and 6 per cent increase over the previous models respectively. BMW’s eminent and exclusive Dynamic Control blending with the xDrive allows new directional stability and precision under all conditions varying drive force between the two rears improving control and pulling force on different surfaces. BMW announces end of M6 production

Its official, BMW has ceased the production of M6. That would also mean the end of its muscular V10 engine, the heart of the car.

BMW confirmed that it will discontinue both the M6 coupe and convertible. BMW M6 concept made its debut at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show. The uniquely styled GT cars gained prominence in the US with its incredible speed, power and acceleration. BMW 5 Series Receives Five Stars in New More Stringent Crash Test

 

Press Release: The all-new BMW 5 Series was one of only two vehicles to receive an overall five-star rating in the first crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration under the new, more stringent New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).

New criteria for the NCAP rating system include: more stringent side-impact tests, use of crash-test dummies of varying size (now also simulating a small adult female as well as a medium-size adult male), collection of more data, introduction of a single overall rating score and the highlighting of high-tech crash avoidance systems like electronic stability control, lane departure warning and forward collision warning.

“The performance of the new 5 Series in these tough new tests reflects BMW’s long-held belief in a holistic approach to vehicle safety that places equal emphasis on active and passive safety,” said Jim O’Donnell, President of BMW of North America. “That’s why we were the first to introduce the Head Protection System in 1997 and why we made Dynamic Stability Control, our electronic stability control system, standard on every BMW sold in the US beginning with the 2000 model year.”

The all-new 2011 BMW 5 Series is available with Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Detection, and Active Cruise Control with a Stop & Go feature. It is also available with Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection, a BMW first.
